The World Produces Over 2 Billion Tonnes of Municipal Solid Waste Every Year

According to the World Bank, we’re generating 2.01 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste annually — and at least 33% of it is not managed in an environmentally safe manner. That’s like dumping a full garbage truck’s worth of trash into the environment every second.

Plastic Waste in the Ocean Could Outweigh Fish by 2050

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation warned that if we don't change our consumption and waste habits, plastic in the ocean will outweigh all fish by 2050. Currently, an estimated 11 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year.

Organic Waste Makes Up the Largest Share of Global Waste

Globally, food and green waste make up about 44% of total solid waste. In low-income countries, that number can be as high as 53%. The kicker? Much of this could be composted, but instead, it ends up in landfills, where it releases methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than CO₂.
